Fundamentals of Reliable Flash Storage: An Introduction to Hyperstone Controller Technology
This paper provides an overview of controller hardware and firmware technology. Managing the interfaces to non-volatile memory such as NAND flash on one side and to a host system on the other, as well as translating the different protocols used on both sides, is a basic function of all controllers. Additionally, flash controllers must cope with the inherent physical imperfections of non-volatile memory. Handling these imperfections requires several specific functions, which define the achievable quality of each NVM-based storage system.
